Smooth playback is the difference between editing and waiting. Lightworks gives you several levers - proxies, playback quality, GPU precision, and housekeeping habits - to keep a heavy project responsive on the hardware you have.
Proxies are lightweight copies of your media that play easily where camera originals struggle. Generate them for demanding formats and let Lightworks use them automatically during editing; exports always use the originals. This is the single most effective performance improvement for high-resolution or camera-raw material (see Proxies and performance media).
The Playback Media Quality setting on the video page of the project settings controls which media Lightworks plays - originals or proxies - so you can trade fidelity for responsiveness while cutting and switch back for finishing.
GPU Precision (output page of the project settings) selects 8-bit or 16-bit processing. 8-bit is faster and fine for editing; 16-bit is for grading and final rendering. If effects-heavy playback is sluggish, check you're not paying for 16-bit while you cut.
R3D and BRAW clips have configurable decode settings - lowering decode quality during the edit makes raw material far more responsive, and you can restore full quality for finishing (see Media formats and technical settings).
Imports, transcodes, proxy generation, and exports run as background tasks. They're designed to let you keep working, but they do consume disk and CPU - if the system feels sluggish, check the Tasks page and let heavy jobs complete (see Batch export and background tasks).
Tip: Sequences play more smoothly on a second pass once material is cached - a first-play stutter that vanishes on replay is normal, not a fault.
